Fasciation? Fascination!

‘How unique and special are these flowers, right?’
‘Oh, that’s a deformity. Imperfection.’
‘Why would you say that!’
‘Wouldn’t you say the same for someone who is different from the normal, would you?’

This conversation got me thinking. Have you ever seen flowers that seem to break all the rules of nature? These images showcase a fascinating phenomenon called ‘fasciation’. These flowers lose their usual shape, growing wider instead of taller, because of various factors like genetics, hormone imbalances, injuries, or infections. Regardless of the cause, the result is a captivating display of botanical eccentricity.

What’s interesting is how we react to such unusual flowers. Deformities in plants, like fasciation, often spark wonder and joy. We admire their uniqueness, finding beauty in their unexpected shapes and forms. Sadly, this acceptance seems to vanish when it comes to deformities in other living beings.

In nature, deformities in animals often trigger feelings of pity or sympathy. We empathize with their struggle and may feel the urge to offer help. However, when it comes to our fellow humans, the response can be different. Differences in appearance, behavior, or abilities are often met with discomfort or even discrimination. We often judge people based on superficial characteristics like skin color, body shape, or physical features. Those who deviate from the perceived “norm” face unfair treatment and prejudice.

Why do we react so differently?

Perhaps it’s because we’re taught to value perfection and conformity from a young age. We see deviations from the norm as flaws.

What if we approached human differences with the same acceptance and curiosity as we do with botanical anomalies? What if we celebrated each individual as a unique expression of humanity?

Together, we can create a more inclusive world. Let’s embrace diversity in all its forms and ensure that every person feels valued and respected for who they are.
